Yoga Isn't About Touching Your Toes

One of the things most people say to me is:

“I’d love to come to yoga… but I’m not flexible enough.”

If you have ever had this thought, I want you to know something.

You don't need to be flexible to start yoga. whaaaat?!

In fact, that’s a bit like saying you need to be fit before you go to the gym.

Flexibility may improve over time, but it’s only a tiny part of what yoga has to offer.

First of all there are eight limbs of Yoga, and Asana (the physical postures/practice) is just one of them: yama (abstinences), niyama (observances), āsana (postures), prāṇāyāma (breath control), pratyāhāra (withdrawal of the senses), dhāraṇā (concentration), dhyāna (meditation), and samādhi (absorption).

Yoga is an opportunity to meet yourself exactly as you are.

Some days your body feels open and energised. Other days it feels stiff, heavy or tired. Rather than fighting against that, yoga invites us to listen. To notice. To respond with kindness instead of judgement.

The poses are simply a tool and what really matters is what happens while you’re in them.

Can you stay present with your breath?

Can you notice when you’re holding tension?

Can you soften your shoulders, unclench your jaw, or let go of the need to be perfect?

These are the moments where the practice begins.

Over time, you may find your hamstrings lengthen, your balance improves or your core becomes stronger. But often the changes that people notice most aren’t physical at all.

You might find yourself sleeping better.

Feeling calmer in stressful situations.

Taking a deeper breath before reacting.

Trusting yourself a little more.

These are the quiet transformations that rarely make it onto Instagram, but they’re often the ones that have the biggest impact on everyday life.

Yoga also reminds us that progress isn’t linear.

Some weeks you’ll feel stronger than ever, and other weeks your body may ask for rest. Neither is better than the other. Both are part of the journey.

The beauty of yoga is that there is no finish line. No perfect pose to achieve. No gold medal for touching your toes. There is simply the practice of returning to yourself, again and again.

So if you’ve been waiting until you’re more flexible, stronger or more confident before stepping onto the mat, perhaps this is your reminder that you don’t have to wait.

Come exactly as you are.

Your body doesn’t need to earn its place here.

It’s already enough, I promise you!

See you on the mat.

Riy🤍

Breath as a Bridge

In a world that often asks us to move faster, do more and be constantly switched on; it’s easy to become disconnected from ourselves. We spend so much time in our heads that we become so disconnected
